Windstorm - June 11, 2008

On the evening of Wednesday, June 11, 2008, a cold front came through the NYC area, bringing a much-needed break from a week of extremely hot and humid weather. The front also brought very strong winds, causing some damage to structures and plant life. At this location in Riverside Park around 89th street, extremely strong gusts brought down some venerable old trees, notably large locust trees on the edge of the promenade that (based on trunk ring counts) may have dated from around the 1934 "West Side Improvement" that covered the tracks and created the promenade.
