Olympic Pool and Ice RinkConstruction on this new ice rink and pool structure began in 2001 but was stopped when construction bids came in higher than expected and when the city's focus shifted following 9/11/2001. Construction resumed in 2005 as part of the city's unsuccessful bid to host the 2012 Olympics. This unique 110,000 square foot building with a cable-stayed roof will feature an Olympic-sized 50-meter/10-lane pool with a state-of-the-art movable pool floor for flexible swimming and seating for several hundred spectators, a 200' x 85' ice skating rink with bleachers for over 400 spectators, meeting/social rooms, a 3-story atrium Lobby, wet and dry classrooms, full separate locker facilities for swimming and skating, outdoor sun decks and a high diving board. The $60 million facility was designed by Handel Architects in association with Hom + Goldman. (artist's renderings of the completed facility)
