Brooklyn Bridge
The Brooklyn Bridge is the first and greatest of the East River Bridges,
connecting lower Manhattan with Brooklyn. The main suspension span extends
1,596 feet and the total length of the bridge with approaches is 6,016 feet.
The bridge was designed by John Robeling and opened to the public on
January 3, 1870. Originally configured for two rail lines and four lanes of
vehicular traffic on a single level with a elevated central walkway, the bridge
was reconfigured numerous times, with a 1944-1954 reconstruction that
removed the rail tracks to permit six lanes of auto traffic.
