11th Avenue Subway Station
In October of 2007, the Metropolitan Transit Authority began awarding contracts for an extension of the IRT Flushing Line (#7 Train) from its existing terminus at Times Square under 41st Street (which opened in 1917) to an new station here on Eleventh Avenue at 34th Street across from the Jacob Javits Convention Center. The two-track extension will run through a new 7,000-foot deep-bored tunnel under 41st Street that turns south and runs under Eleventh Avenue. While there is interest in building a station at 41st Street and Eleventh Avenue to service the burgeoning crop of luxury development on the far west side of Hell's Kitchen, as of this writing, the city (suffering from chronic financial difficulties) hasn't come up with the money to build the station. The tunnel will actually continue south to 23rd street to provide train storage, leaving the possibility of later extension further south into Chelsea and the Chelsea Piers recreational area.
While the extension was originally part of an ill-fated 2005 proposal to build an athletic stadium over the LIRR Hudson Yards and host the 2012 Olympic Games, interest in the extension remained to help promote development in the vestigial industrial and warehouse areas of the far west side.
