Toledo Terminal Upper Maumee River Swing Bridge

Maumee (Toledo), Ohio

This 1,450 foot railroad bridge over the Maumee River was build around 1902. It was built by the Toledo Terminal Railroad, which from the maps I've seen on the web appears to have run a loop around what was then the bustling industrial center of Toledo, Ohio. The factories have long been closed and, supposedly, the bridge was abandoned following a destructive derailment in 1982. It runs next to the current Ohio Turnpike (I-90) river crossing, peering across like a ghost from another time. For historic photos of the bridge see michiganrailroads.com Supposedly there is a plan to turn the bridge and the rest of the abandoned right-of-way into a pedestrian trail.
