Quachita River Railroad Bridge

Monroe, LA

This 906-foot-long steel-truss swing bridge over the Quachita River was built in the 1880s. At the time I visited in 2006, it was owned and used by the Kansas City Southern Railroad. The brick and mortor center pier started tilting in the late 1990s and a rather complex repair procedure was started in late 2007. Downtown Monroe was once a bustling river city, but has now been reduced largely to a medical center and some civic offices. However a few lovely old buildings from its halcyon days still remain.
